Appropriate cleaning method
Venetian blinds are a beautiful addition to any window and room. They are versatile and are appropriate for most decorative styles. As with any other window treatment, it is important to know proper maintenance of the blinds, including the appropriate methods of cleaning them. Fortunately, cleaning the blinds is a simple process that requires nothing more than following a few simple tips.
Dust the Blinds:
Before applying any cleaning product or water to the blinds, close the slats and use a slightly damp cloth to remove the inevitable dust. Gently wipe the blinds with the cloth until the dust is fully removed. In general, it is best to dust every other day or so to prevent the dust from building up or creating a sticky residue. About once a week the dusting should be followed up with further cleaning.
Select a Gentle Cleaner:
When cleaning the Venetian blinds, opt for something gentle like rubbing alcohol mixed with water or a gentle window cleaner rather than a harsh cleaner like bleach or ammonia. It is not necessary to use harsh chemicals because the most common problem with the blinds is stuck on dust.
Try Using a Small Paintbrush:
For those small areas on the blinds, use a clean and small paintbrush dipped in the selected cleaner. This helps get the areas that are harder to clean, such as the thin edge of the blinds or the side between the window and the blinds. The paintbrush bristles are small, so they can fit into areas a soft cloth cannot.
Pay Attention to Materials:
While cleaning the Venetian blinds, it is important to pay attention to the type of material beforehand to select an appropriate cleaning method. Materials like wood might require a wood cleaner rather that using the window cleaner or alcohol because of the material. In the case of synthetic polymer blinds, it might be best to remove the blinds and soak them in water and a gentle cleansing detergent before wiping with a soft cloth and rinsing the detergent from the blinds. This type of cleaning method will require hanging the blinds to dry before putting them back on the windows. The material makes a difference in how the blinds are cleaned.
